They were founded in 1988, and moved to Papa Stronsay in 1999. Having been estbalished in association with the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), after the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum in 2007 they applied to the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei for the regularisation of their canonical status. Part of this process involved the change of their name to the current one; they were formerly known as the Transalpine Redemptorists.
